One of the first questions EV owners ask is whether their electrical panel can handle a Level 2 charger. The honest answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no, and the only way to know for sure is a proper load calculation, not a rule of thumb based on panel age or amperage.

What a Load Calculation Actually Does

A load calculation looks at your panel size, existing appliances, and the additional load a charger will add. Two homes with identical 100-amp panels can have very different results, because the calculation depends on what is already using power, not just the panel rating on the label.

When an Upgrade Is Actually Needed

  • The calculation shows the new charger would exceed safe panel capacity
  • The panel is obsolete, damaged, or using known-defective breaker brands
  • You are also planning solar, battery storage, or a heat pump
  • There is no available breaker space and no room for a tandem or subpanel workaround
